How Many Tables and Chairs Do You Need for a Party?

Plan one chair per guest plus about 5% spare. A 60-inch round table seats 8 (10 tight), a 72-inch round seats 10 (12 tight), and a 6-foot rectangular table seats 6–8. Divide the guest count by seats per table and round up; for 100 guests at 60-inch rounds that is 13 tables. Add tables for food, drinks, gifts and cake.

Quick Formula

Tables = guests ÷ seats per table, rounded up. 100 guests at 60-inch rounds (8 each) = 12.5 → 13 tables. Chairs = guests + about 5% spare.

Floor Space

As a rule of thumb, a seated dinner with round tables needs about 10–12 square feet per guest, standing cocktails about 6–8, and a dance floor about 3–4 square feet per dancing guest. Ask the venue for its fire-code capacity for your layout; that number is the legal limit.
